We had one of the most enjoyable days ever visiting the haunted May Stringer House Museum, perched on one of the highest hills in the area that overlooks the town, located at 601 Museum Court in Brooksville, Florida. A Victorian era three-story house with seven gables is bursting with over 11,000 artifacts, donated from local families, and spread throughout fourteen rooms.
On the grounds at the back is a fully accessible paved memory garden. It's a lovely place to take a quiet stroll and admire all the little angel memorials (dotted among a wide variety of plants and trees) which are dedicated to some of the babies who died in the area.
Our visit was greatly enhanced by the charming docents leading the hour long tours, who are all members of the Hernando Historical Museum Association that runs the museum. The four ladies we met today really know their history and expertly answered all our questions.
The May Stringer House is a must see place and the tour is a bargain at only $5.00. There are three floors in the house, which are included in the tour, but only the ground floor is handicap accessible, with a ramp that leads up from the parking lot.
There are two other historic buildings in Brooksville managed by the same association - the 1885 train depot and the Countryman one-room school house, which is a reconstruction of the first school built in the area in the 1850's. I have yet to visit these other two locations.
We were there back in 2012 It was Awesome...We got a lot of pictures and voices on our camera and phones that we downloaded, and sent some of the pictures in of the Blue Room to a lady named Bonnie.
The May String Manor is one of the few grand historical places still around, it is 2 blocks from down town and a cool place to visit. Events are even better too!
We would love to come back to visit and see what we can catch again with our equipment that we updated. We missed being there for Halloween event to help out because our van at the time was given us prombles , I would have loved to have helped with that... I don't know if they are still doing the Halloween attractions , but would like to find out that was in 2012... Our names are Carolyn and Mike... Hope to be there again soon
There are evening Ghost Tours at the May Stringer House and at the Train depot. If you're a paranormal investigator, hopeful to communicate with one of the ghosts still in residence then you're in luck because both facilities are available overnight for a fee. How spooky is that!
The association raises money to keep up the three historic properties by holding a variety of fundraisers, the biggest being a civil war re-enactment held in the winter months.
Went there after planning on it and driving a few hours. Website, smart phone, sign on the door, message machine all said was opening at 12. Well by 12:15 was still closed. 3 carloads if people sitting and waiting. I called around and got a call back. They said they weren't going to open as they were afraid there may be trouble in town.... "And we want to keep our volunteers safe'. The town was so quiet that it was like a cemetery. Day was ruined. For no reason.
My family and I went to the may stringer house and we thought it was ok. Not what everyone on here is saying with 5 stars. Mind you its a very large very cool house that part was awesome. Everything in it though was a let down. Nothing there besides like 1 picture was originally from the house. They lead you on that its a whole house full of the house artifacts and its not. Everything in there was donated like a junk storage. A lot of it is old and very cool but we was let down that it was not original to the house. Second you don't walk through on your own time. There is volunteers there that walk you through telling you what they think they know about the stuff. A lot of people asked questions about the things and the girls was like " oh I don't know that was donated, we don't know anything about it but we think it was used for ??/" It was kind of embarrassing. One of the younger girls was very nervous talking in front of people, she didn't know anything. She was like yeah and these things over here and those things over there. She didn't even know names of anything. On top of going through obviously there was a couple people coming in after us so for the rest of the tour we was rushed through so they could fit more people in. It was a very big let down. The whole tour lasted about 20 minutes. Then they didn't accept cards, thank god we had cash or they wouldn't have let us in. Then there was wasp flying around up stairs in the attic and almost stung my husband that's highly allergic. Very dangerous situation. Then for the big bang went truly went for one reason because its suppose to be haunted and I have seen my share of ghost and had plenty of experiences and I myself is a sensitive. Even more let down I nor my family felt or seen anything in this house. Yes you have the feeling of being in an old home but other than that we felt absolutely nothing which was a huge disappointment. I have read a lot of people on here like this is SO HAUNTED, I was VERY let down. There might be spirits passing through now and then but as for ghost that's there constant I would call that a BIG bluff. I wouldn't waste my money on night tours because I did not sense 1 thing in there. But overall it was a very cool house but tour and sensing things was not a success at all. :( It would have been cool to see or hear or even sense something but I didn't. I hope that everyone else that did, had fun and got what they was looking for. It may be haunted but it wasn't the day I was there. :( Maybe next time!
